In 2017, Rhode Island Monthly Magazine honored Dr. Blough as one of the top Oral and Maxillofacial Surgeons. Dr. Blough has been honored now for 5 years; since 2012.

After graduating from Temple University with a Doctor of Dental Surgery (DDS) in 1979, Dr. Blough completed his internship at Abington Memorial Hospital in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania, in 1980. While serving in the United States Navy, he completed a one-year fellowship in exodontia with a strong concentration in treating impacted and infected teeth.

His Oral and Maxillofacial Surgery training was completed at the Naval Hospital in Portsmouth, Virginia, in 1989. In 1988, during residency training, Dr. Blough was certified in Dental Implantology. He was board certified in 1992 in Oral and Maxillofacial Surgery and was awarded a Doctor of Dental Medicine (DMD) in 1997 and re-certified in 2002 & 2012.

Following several more tours in the active Navy, he entered service in the Navy Reserves from which he retired in 2003 as a full captain. Dr. Blough entered private practice in 1993, while in the Navy Reserve.

Since entering private practice, Dr. Blough was the first Oral and Maxillofacial Surgeon in Rhode Island to offer laser surgery for a variety of soft tissue problems, including treatment for snoring and obstructive sleep apnea. He was also one of the first Oral and Maxillofacial Surgeons in Rhode Island to offer 3D planning for dental implants and other oral and maxillofacial disorders and diseases.

Dr. Blough, was an assistant professor in the Tufts University Oral and Maxillofacial Surgery Department, taught oral surgery and laser surgery to dental students and residents. He is also a lecturer for Materialize, a leading 3D dental implant planning institution.
